GETTING HERE

The two ways from Sidari

There are two ways to reach Othoni. One is by the regular ferry service, and the other is by day cruise. Here is the difference.

The scheduled boat — a real day on the island

The scheduled boat to Othoni leaves from Agios Stefanos in Avliotes, about 8 km from Sidari — a short drive, taxi or bus. It goes over at 10:30 and back at 16:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, so from Sidari you can make it a genuine day trip with about four hours on the island. This is the way to come if you actually want to set foot on Othoni, swim, and eat here.

Sidari is the natural base for this. It is the nearest resort to the port, it has the buses, and it puts you fifteen minutes from the fast boat instead of an hour and a half from Corfu Town.

The day cruise — a different thing, worth knowing

You will also see day cruises from Sidari advertised to the Diapontia islands. These are boat trips: in a single day they take in Othoni, Erikousa and Mathraki, usually with stops at Aspri Ammos and Calypso's cave and a swim or two, and back to Sidari by evening. They are run by private operators and the season is roughly late May to mid-September.

They are a lovely way to see the coast from the water. But you should know what they are before you book: an hour or so ashore on Othoni, not a day on it. If your aim is to see the three islands from the sea, take the cruise. If your aim is Othoni itself, take the scheduled boat from Agios Stefanos.

What to choose

The questions worth asking first.

Is there a direct ferry from Sidari to Othoni?
No. The regular ferry departs from Agios Stefanos Avliotes, about 8 km from Sidari — a short journey by car, taxi, or bus. Sidari is the closest resort to this port, which makes it a convenient base, but the ferry itself does not depart from Sidari.
What's the difference between the cruise and the scheduled boat?
The regular ferry from Agios Stefanos gives you around four hours on Othoni — a real day trip. The day cruise from Sidari visits all three Diapontian Islands in the same day, so you only spend a short time ashore on Othoni.
I'm staying in Sidari — which should I take?
If you want to spend the day on Othoni — swimming, having a meal, and exploring on foot — take the regular ferry from Agios Stefanos, 8 km away. If you want to see all three islands and experience the coastline from the sea in a single day, choose the cruise.
How do I get from Sidari to Agios Stefanos?
It is about 8 km away. There is a bus service, taxis are available, and it is a short drive if you have a car, with parking available at the port. Make sure you arrive before the 10:30 departure.
