PLAN YOUR TRIP
A day, or a night?
One day is enough to get a first taste of Othoni. But if you stay the night, you'll discover the island as it truly is: peaceful, unhurried, and authentic. See what you can experience with each option before you book your ferry.
The short answer
Yes, you can visit Othoni for just one day, but it depends on where you're travelling from.
From Agios Stefanos the ferry arrives on the island at 10:30 and departs again at 16:00. That gives you around four hours, enough for a swim, a good meal, and a walk around the island's main village. However, it isn't enough time to explore the more secluded beaches that are only accessible by boat, hike to the lighthouse, or visit the other settlements and walking trails.
From Corfu Town things are different. The ferry journey takes about four hours each way, and there is no return service on the same day. In other words, a day trip isn't possible. If you're travelling from Corfu Town, it's worth staying at least one night to experience the island properly.
There is also a third option: Aday cruise from North of Corfu that visits all three Diapontian Islands. It's a pleasant excursion, but it doesn't give you much time on Othoni itself. Most cruises stop for around an hour, so it's better thought of as a brief visit during a boat trip rather than a day on the island. It's good to know the difference before making your booking.
What a night gives you that a day cannot
The island changes as soon as the last ferry leaves. Day visitors head home, the harbour grows quiet, and Othoni returns to its natural rhythm. That's when the experience that can't be squeezed into a day trip really begins: a relaxed dinner at a family-run taverna, a chat with the locals, and the night sky. With almost no light pollution, the Milky Way stretches overhead in a way that has become rare to see.
Then morning arrives. The first boat to Aspri Ammos before the wind picks up, the walk to the lighthouse in the cool morning air, and a swim before the beaches begin to fill. These are the moments that make the difference, and none of them fit into four hours.
If you only have one day, it's still worth coming. But if you can stay for one or two nights, you'll discover Othoni as it truly is: peaceful, authentic, and wonderfully unhurried.
